It's a tale as old as time... or at least as old as the 15 years I've been working with clients on their websites:

A business owners decides they need a website.

They figure they can't do it on their own because, well, they're not a website design and heard that's not easy to learn.

So they decide to hire someone... To the tune of thousands of dollars.

$5k
$10k

I've heard it all.

And you'd think after spending that kind of money you'd be good to go.

Ready to build your online empire.

Right?

WRONG.

Sadly, oh so wrong.

There are so many problems with this:

1. Not what you need - If you don't know what you need your website to do, and you don't because you're now, you're about 99% likely to hire someone to build something you don't need.
2. Trapped website - A lot of designers build on proprietary software which means you are now tied to them forever and even your domain name might be tied in with them, so you're trapped. That's deceptive.
3. Too fancy - Even if you hire a totally ethical designer they're likely to build you a fancy site (which you don't need, not in the beginning) which has a lot of functions and special setups that you will NOT know how to use. So now you have to pay them to update it, and wait until they are available.
4. Designers are not marketers - If you need your website to make sales you may have just done the absolute worst thing for your sales. Because designers make pretty sites - they are not focusing on sites that sell.

These are the reasons why I recommend almost everyone who's starting their online business journey start with learning how to build their own website.
